Week 14 Picks

What a sorry excuse for competition last night. The Steelers should be ashamed of their performance and now have played themselves right out of the playoffs. As always home teams in caps.

INDIANAPOLIS (-7) over Denver
I've been burned enough trying to predict the Colts first loss of the year. Repeat after me: I will from this point forward not gamble against the Colts and Peyton Manning. A win for the Colts sets a record for regular season wins (22) and wraps up home field throughout the AFC Playoffs.

Cincinnati (+6.5) over MINNESOTA
The old man against a good defense in December. I've seen this one before and I know the ending. Give me the Bengals, who have the best defense in football and a chance to clinch the AFC North.

TAMPA BAY (+3) over New York Jets
Kellen Clemmons on the road. He has an opportunity to audition for teams for next year, but I don't expect much. The Bucs are competitive at home and the Jets haven't been the same since they lost Kris Jenkins for the year.

KANSAS CITY (PK) over Buffalo
... (those are my thoughts for this game)

CHICAGO (+3) over Green Bay
Trap game for the Packers. Last night proved that division games can be competitive; I think the Bears muster up enough pride to pull off the upset at home.

New Orleans (-10) over ATLANTA
I think the Falcons signed a couple guys off the street to play this week. The O-Line, QB, and running back position are all banged up. The Saints seem determined to go 16-0.

Detroit (+13.5) over BALTIMORE
I'm a sucker for these huge lines involving the Lions. The Ravens don't score a lot of points and Detroit might be able to get a touchdown or two and cover the big number.

Miami (+3) over JACKSONVILLE
Sadly, the Jaguars don't have a home field advantage especially in this game. The winner most likely gets the 6-seed in the AFC. I like the Dolphins running game and defense.

NEW ENGLAND (-13) over Carolina
Matt Moore on the road against Belichick. I'm giving him one more week before I jump off the bandwagon as everyone else seems to have already done so. If only Jake Delhomme were playing in this one, it'd be a lock.

Seattle (+6.5) over HOUSTON
Huge number here for two teams that have evidently mailed it in. Jim Mora gets more out of this players than Gary Kubiack, who is possibly coaching his final few games. I'll take the motivated, interested team.

TENNESSEE (-13) over St. Louis
Super Bowl rematch! Not quite. One team is playing meaningful games and the other is preparing for the draft.

Washington (+1) over OAKLAND
Who would ever gamble on this game? In a smaller subplot, it's Deangelo Hall's return to Oakland. I'm sure Al Davis is thrilled...if he's alive.

San Diego (+3) over DALLAS
Hey everyone, free points. The Chargers don't lose in December and the Cowboys don't win in December. The three points are just icing on the cake.

Philadelphia (+1) over NEW YORK GIANTS
The Giants secondary is still in shambles and the Eagles have a slew of weapons to use. Add to the fact that they pressure the QB and Eli's bad foot and I'm sensing another disaster for the Giants.

Arizona (-3.5) over SAN FRANCISCO
You would think Monday Night Football would get better choices of games. This is another stinker that is sure to draw putrid numbers.

Thursday Night Pick

The NFL sure knows how to pick their Thursday night games. I count this as clunker number four in a row. The only intrigue is Mike Tomlin's post game press conference.

Pittsburgh (-9.5) over CLEVELAND
The Steelers HAVE to win this game. I know I've said that for the past 3 weeks, but this week it must happen. The Browns are inept as ever so the Steelers shouldn't miss Polamalu this week.

Catching up with the Hot Stove League

I've neglected baseball in this space for a while, but now that some things are starting to happen at the baseball Winter Meetings, I figured I'd check in with my thoughts.

* The Atlanta Braves signed Billy Wagner to a one-year deal to be their closer next year. It gives the Red Sox a first round pick and a compensation round pick. The Mets, who traded Wagner to the Red Sox for two organizational fillers get nothing. That's why they finish 4th with a high payroll and the Sox are in the playoffs every year.

* Not sure the Braves are thrilled now since Rafael Soriano accepted arbitration and will come back on a one-year deal around 7-8 million depending on his arb figure. The Braves will most likely try to trade him as that is one expensive 7th inning man. It'll be interesting to see how this affects the Braves pursuit of a bat while they try to unload some money.

* Randy Wolf, do you need a head examination? The Brewers have offered Wolf, a solid yet mediocre left-handed starter, a 3-year deal in the range of 30-33 million. I would have had a seizure and not been able to sign that deal if I was Wolf.

* The St. Louis Cardinals signed Brad Penny to a one-year deal. Two words: phe-nominal. (Sorry for the bad Jim Rome joke) This is a great deal and insurance for Joel Pineiro leaving. Dave Duncan does wonders with pitchers and Penny was close to dominant with the Giants in the last two months of the season.

* I'm sorry, I know everyone loves the Mariners signing of Chone Figgins, but I don't at all. Just a couple years ago, the baseball world was talking about Figgins as a super utility kind of guy. Now, he's worth 4 years and $36 million. What did I miss? He doesn't hit for power at a position that is expected to produce power. He's a good defender, but not better than who he is replacing. Where is the offense going to come from for this Mariners team? A 40-year old Ken Griffey, Jr.?

* The mega-deal between the Tigers, Yankees, and Diamondbacks is near complete. Curtis Granderson goes to the Yankees, Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy go to the Diamondbacks, and the Tigers receive Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke, and Austin Jackson. I know I'm a bit biased, but I really like this deal for the Tigers. They get younger, cheaper, and better while giving up two players who are on the decline. Jackson's second half numbers were more in line with his career numbers and Granderson hit .249. He'll be better in New York, but he's never been a superstar caliber player. The Tigers get a pitcher in Scherzer who strikes out over a hitter an inning to go along with Verlander and Porcello. Also, Austin Jackson has the ability to be a solid regular center fielder and he's much cheaper than Granderson. I know why the Yankees made this deal. They play to win now and it also makes them younger, cheaper, and more athletic. Scott Boras might want to rethink his decision to ask for 4 years for Johnny Damon. I have no idea what the Diamondbacks are doing. They give up the best player in the trade (Scherzer) along with a young reliever who projects to be a closer in the future. They take on two players with less team control and who are worse pitchers in general. How many home runs will Ian Kennedy give up in that park? It's just another example of big market teams in the AL bettering themselves and a small market NL team trying something that on paper doesn't work.

Week 13 Picks

Well, last week was a disaster of epic proportions. Not much to say. As always home teams in caps.

KANSAS CITY (+6) over Denver
Did you know that the Broncos are 1-15 in December games at Arrowhead Stadium? I'm not sure what to do with this information, but it's there.

PITTSBURGH (-15) over Oakland
The Steelers are 6-5 and will waltz into the playoffs. Oakland is followed by Cleveland, which is followed by two home games.

JACKSONVILLE (+2) over Houston
Do Vegas odds makers watch these games?

Tennessee (+6.5) over INDIANAPOLIS
I'm officially a believer. Vince Young and Chris Johnson are doing something special with this team. I don't think they run off the 10 straight to finish the season, but it's possible they cover 10 straight.

Philadelphia (-5.5) over ATLANTA
Mike Vick back in Atlanta. It's a shame he won't actually be on the field for more than 3 plays. The Falcons P.A. Announcer will probably play "Who Let The Dogs Out" when he hits the field.

Detroit (+13) over CINCINNATI
The Bengals sneak by these bad teams and bring it against the good teams (see Cleveland last week). They'll sleep walk their way to another victory, but it won't be pretty.

WASHINGTON (+9.5) over New Orleans
The Skins have been sneaky competitive since Sherman Lewis took over the play calling duties. This could be the Saints' toughest game in pursuit of 16-0.

CAROLINA (-5) over Tampa Bay
This is a pick based on the fact that Matt Moore is playing and Jake Delhomme is not. An immediate positive influence on turnover margin.

St. Louis (+9) over CHICAGO
The Rams are bad. The Bears are just miserable.

San Diego (-13.5) over CLEVELAND
I don't know what else to say about Eric Mangini. I guess the way to sum it up best: Brady Quinn is the Browns' best receiver; and he's their QB.

SEATTLE (-1) over San Francisco
The Seahawks have played one game all year that has been decided by 10 points or less. Pick a side, but I think they'll play well at home.

Minnesota (-3.5) over ARIZONA
Two old quarterbacks, same old story. The Vikings always have their way with the Cardinals and that should continue.

NEW YORK GIANTS (+1.5) over Dallas
The G-Men getting points at home? Where do I sign up? It's December. And Dallas still has Tony Romo quarterbacking their team. Let the fall begin.

MIAMI (+4) over New England
Did anyone else see the Patriots' defense Monday Night? Old, slow, no pass rush. Miami always plays the Pats well at home and that will continue.

GREEN BAY (-3.5) over Baltimore
Dennis Dixon; Aaron Rodgers. If you struggle with the former, you're going to get crushed by the latter. The Ravens defense is the most overrated unit in football right now and Rodgers is firing on all cylinders.

Thursday Night Pick

For all 3 people that might watch this game tonight, I'll make a quick selection. I have a quick suggestion for the NFL though: stop putting horrendous games on Thursday Night.

BUFFALO (+3) over New York Jets
This game is in Toronto because Ralph Wilson wants to grow his team's fan base. All he's doing is alienating the loyal Bills fans in Buffalo. Anyway, both teams stink. The Bills won the game in New York with defense and I expect more of the same tonight. If you don't want to fall asleep before 9:30 tonight, keep this game off your television set.

The Tebow Misconception

Well, I finally heard enough. All of the hoopla and hyperbole thrown around about Tim Tebow and his last home game today has finally triggered a response from me. John Saunders, someone I respect, just said that if Tim Tebow could win a third National Title this year, he may be considered the greatest college football player ever. Did Chris Leak somehow get erased from history? If I remember correctly, he was the QB for that Florida National Championship team. He was the player who torched Ohio St. Tim Tebow is a fine football player and an even better individual. However, we need to pull in the reigns when discussing him as the greatest college player ever. Leader? Maybe. But Barry Sanders, Earl Cambell, and a slew of others take objection when pundits refer to Tebow as the greatest player. And it's not even close.

Week 12 Picks

After an atrocious day of football on Thanksgiving, it's time for me to wrap up the week 12 picks. There are some really good games this week, which culminates with New Orleans-New England on Monday night. As always, home teams in caps.

HOUSTON (+3.5) over Indianapolis
That half point is just so nice. The Colts are coming off of some lackluster performances and the Texans need this win to stay in the wild card hunt. Indy has wrapped up the division at this point.

CINCINNATI (-13.5) over Cleveland
Where's Mangini going to coach next? I'd wager on the UFL. Maybe the European NFL. It's going to be difficult to go any lower in the NFL.

MINNESOTA (-11) over Chicago
Jay Cutler showed progress last week. He only threw one interception instead of his normal 2-3. Too bad the Bears don't have an O-Line, D-Line, Secondary, or Receivers. Other than that, they're a solid team.

PHILADELPHIA (-9) over Washington
Jim Zorn's resume is on Monster. He's hoping someone else will give him a shot in a career he has no experience in.

Miami (-3) over BUFFALO
The Bills have really played hard the past few weeks. And T.O. had a monster game last week. The Dolphins though are the better team and have something to play for this week.

Arizona (+3) over TENNESSEE
I've been riding the Titans the past couple weeks lucratively. However, the Cardinals are the best team the Titans will have played. Good teams win these games and I think Arizona is a good team. Their run D is second to none and they should be able to exploit an injured Titans secondary. How's that for analysis?

ST. LOUIS (+4) over Seattle
I have no other reason to make this pick other than this: both teams stink and the Rams are due for another win at home.

Tampa Bay (+12) over ATLANTA
The Falcons bandwagon has crashed. They should beat a punchless Bucs team, but I've been disappointed in Matt Ryan's progress this year. Josh Freeman makes just enough plays to keep it close.

Carolina (+3) over NEW YORK JETS
I have a new whipping boy. Jay Cutler, you're off the hook for a week. The "Sanchise" has turned into a disaster before our eyes. Why should the Jets ever be laying points with a turnover machine at QB? At least Mangini only required a second round pick and some Jets special team players for the right to draft him.

Jacksonville (+3) over SAN FRANCISCO
If no one sees a game, does it actually count in the standings?

SAN DIEGO (-13.5) over Kansas City
The love affair continues. The Chargers do not lose games in late-November or December. It just doesn't happen. Kansas City has played better recently, but the talent gap is still huge.

BALTIMORE (-1.5) over Pittsburgh
Good luck actually getting to be on this game at this line, but it's the only one I had available. News just came out that Big Ben will not be playing and Dennis Dixon will be starting his first game. This line could easily repost at 7 or 8, and I would still take the Ravens.

New England (+2) over NEW ORLEANS
Call me skeptical, but I don't either team can stop the other from scoring. I think the Patriots have a better chance to stop the Saints than vice versa. Either way, bet the over.

Thanksgiving Day Picks

Let me start by saying that Gary Williams should be ashamed of the way his Maryland team performed last night. I had a 40-1 6 team CBB parlay and everyone covered except for his Terrapins, who absolutely mailed it in in the Maui Invitational. Just embarrassing. I will never forgive him or Maryland for this transgression. Never. Now, on to the Thanksgiving Day picks. As always, home team in caps.

DETROIT (+11) over Green Bay
Matthew Stafford, thank you for making my Lions relevant again. That was a heck of a performance Sunday. I'm starting to thing that the Lions' front office made the right decision in selecting Stafford first overall. He probably won't play in this game with a separated left shoulder, but the Lions play inspired football on Thanksgiving. I like them to keep it close.

DALLAS (-13.5) over Oakland
Well, the NFL can't serve it up to the Cowboys any better. Oakland on a short week on the road. Thank goodness I'll be napping from the excess tryptophan.

New York Giants (-7) over DENVER
That was one pathetic effort against the Chargers last week. I know that the talent discrepancy was large, but the Broncos didn't even seem interested in playing the game; a game that determined the AFC West winner most likely; a game at home against a arch-rival. I don't love the Giants either, but I officially am done with the Broncos.

Week 11 Picks

What a pathetic effort by the Panthers at home. How excited are Panther fans for Jake Delhome's extension? Four more years!! This week is again littered with double digit favorites. Great 3-team teaser possibilities. The question is who's going to screw it up. As always home teams in caps.

DETROIT (-3.5) over Cleveland
Oh the horror. This game has been (thankfully) blacked out for the local markets. Imagine having to actually watch this game. Or even worse, go to it. The Browns are a disaster at every level. Detroit only is on the field.

JACKSONVILLE (-9) over Buffalo
The Bills finally fired Dick Jauron. The Jaguars have an outside shot at the playoffs and should play with a sense of urgency. Let's just hope MJD doesn't have a flashback and takes a knee before a cover.

Pittsburgh (-10) over KANSAS CITY
Has Pittsburgh played a winning team on the road all year? Denver doesn't count Broncos fans. The Chiefs have played surprisingly decent on defense, but they won't be able to keep up with the air attack of the Steelers. Re-read that sentence; I said air attack.

Indianapolis (-1) over BALTIMORE
It is bankroll suicide to bet against Peyton Manning. Don't do it. This feels like a game where he'll have the ball for twenty minutes and carve up the Ravens defense to win in the 4th quarter.

Atlanta (+6.5) over NEW YORK GIANTS
I've driving the Falcons bandwagon straight off the cliff if necessary. I just can't get excited about this Giants team at home. Give me Matt Ryan's gun over Eli Manning throwing ducks in the Meadowlands wind.

San Francisco (+6.5) over GREEN BAY
Stay away game for me. When did Green Bay get good? Their win over the Cowboys was a result of Dallas being propped up by the media. Neither team is very good, but the 49ers defense is stout and will constantly pressure poor Aaron Rodgers.

MINNESOTA (-11) over Seattle
I'm tired of hating the old man. For a week. When I wager on him, I like him.

Washington (+11) over DALLAS
Did I sense some life in this Redskins team last week? This is a huge rivalry game and the line on this game is ridiculously high. This could be the huge upset that spoils three-team teasers across the country.

TAMPA BAY (+11.5) over New Orleans
I'm not going to lie. I had the Saints -4.5 in a tease last week. They covered by stopping a 2-pt conversion...against the Rams. The injuries have caught up to the Saints and Josh Freeman has shown a calmness and ability to make plays.

Arizona (-9) over ST. LOUIS
I'm done bashing the Rams for a week. It's the Browns turn. Steven Jackson is an animal and the defense is playing inspired ball. But Kurt Warner has the Rams number. I envision a late TD to cover the spread.

NEW ENGLAND (-10.5) over New York Jets
The crying Rex Ryan did in the locker room is nothing like the tears that will flow after the beating his team experiences this week. This is why you don't talk negatively about the Pats. It will come back to haunt you somehow.

Cincinnati (-9.5) over OAKLAND
Two words: Bruce Gradkowski.

San Diego (-3) over DENVER
Well, at least things are back to normal. The Broncos collapse, the sun rises. I like when things are normal. Orton doesn't look like he'll be playing. This line could really move if Chris Simms is named the starter.

Philadelphia (-3) over CHICAGO
Lovie Smith bought Eagles jerseys for the Bears receivers this week. He's hoping Jay Cutler will throw the ball to opposite color jersey Sunday, as he's done all year.

Tennessee (+4.5) over HOUSTON
So Tennessee is good? I'm so confused at this point. I know Chris Johnson can flat out run and the Texans can flat out miss tackles.

Thursday Night Pick

I can't get too excited about these Thursday night games. San Francisco-Chicago was an embarrassing display of professional football. Miami-Carolina? Yea, there's a heated battle between two average teams. When average teams play one another on short rest, the public gets a mediocre game.

CAROLINA (-3) over Miami
Honestly, I don't care about this game one bit. Carolina is at least playing much better since its abysmal start. Factor in Ronnie Brown making his yearly IR visit and I think the Dolphins' season is cooked. Whoever wins keeps the slim hopes of a playoff appearance alive. 6-seed fodder, but a playoff check nonetheless.

Week 10 Picks

Jay Cutler has 17 interceptions through the first 9 weeks. I'm glad Chicago only gave up TWO first round picks for him. The Bears franchise has been set back a couple years because of trades for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams that have left them without a pick in the first 2 rounds next year. Teams that are terrible on defense and the O-Line need draft picks I'd say. Anyway, home teams in Caps.

Jacksonville (+7) over NEW YORK JETS
Tricky line since it's exactly a TD +1, but I don't trust Mark Sanchez at HOME in November. This is the same player that in October said he hadn't played in poor weather. Well, it's a month later and the Jaguars are built to play well in this environment.

WASHINGTON (+3.5) over Denver
Maybe I'm crazy, but the Redskins looked better in the second half against the Falcons. This is a cross-country trip for a Broncos team that has played poorly the last two weeks. And oh yeah, Kyle Orton turned into Kyle Orton again.

Cincinnati (+7) over PITTSBURGH
Loving the Dogs this week. The Bengals are really good and have a defense that is on par with the Steelers. The difference between these teams is the Bengals are the team that can run the football and control the clock, while Pittsburgh will depend on "Big Ben" to carry the offense.

TENNESSEE (-7) over Buffalo
Vince Young IS walking through that door! Apparently, all it took was 2 years of sitting, suicide thoughts, and being outcast from the team for Young to turn into a game management QB.

Detroit (+17) over MINNESOTA
I can't reasonable justify laying 17 points, I don't care how big a gap there is in talent discrepancy. On a side not, why does Brett Favre feel the need to "mention" to the media all his injuries. And the media just laps it up.

New Orleans (-13.5) over ST. LOUIS
The Saints. On turf. Against the Rams. I feel like Ernest Hemmingway with those sentences.

Atlanta (-1.5) over CAROLINA
So Vegas is buying into the resurgent Panthers? I'm not and look for this one to get ugly. It's time for the Falcons to prove they are a playoff caliber team. Oh yea, Jake Delhomme plays for the Panthers.

Tampa Bay (+10) over MIAMI
Not really a home or road game for either team. I think this Bucs team is frisky and can keep it close against a Dolphins team that just doesn't move the ball very well. Josh Freeman looked really good after getting settled in and Chad Henne has more ups and downs than Apollo's Chariot roller coaster.

Kansas City (+2) over OAKLAND
Ummmm, yea.

ARIZONA (-8.5) over Seattle
Maybe the Cardinals can convince themselves that they are on the road this week. 4-0 on the road, 1-3 at home. Still, Seattle didn't inspire much confidence against the Lions last week and Kurt Warner has the Arizona offense clicking.

Philadelphia (+1.5) over SAN DIEGO
My yearly Super Bowl pick. Both teams need it and the Chargers are hot. So why am I taking the Eagles on the road? Norv Turner. The Chargers have only beat one good team this year (the Giants and it's debatable if they are good).

GREEN BAY (+3) over Dallas
Call me skeptical. Call me a hater. Call me whatever, but I don't think this Dallas team is division-winning caliber. A bad spot last week was the turning point in a big road win. The Packers are desperate and need this one to stay in the playoff hunt. Desperate teams win at home.

INDIANAPOLIS (-3) over New England
An annual ritual at this point. The Patriots are playing excellent on offense, but there is no comparison to Peyton Manning. And in Manning I trust (with my money at least). Expect points and big plays all night. I'm guessing the Colts have the ball last.

Baltimore (-11) over CLEVELAND
Why is Cleveland on MNF? Would ESPN be better off running World Series of Poker reruns?

Thursday Night Pick

Well, for some odd reason the NFL has started playing regular season games on Thursday night in early November. Besides the horribly unfair advantage of 2 teams playing on 3 days rest, it reeks of corporate influence. Why not just let college football have Thursday nights until December? Give America a chance to see the future NFL players and keep an even playing field for all 32 NFL teams. Oh well.

SAN FRANCISCO (-3) over Chicago
Well, these Bears look lifeless after a drubbing at home from the Cardinals. Traveling out west on a short week is not the answer. Poor Lovie Smith is entering his final days as a head coach in the NFL I think.

Friday, November 6, 2009

Week 9 Picks

We've reached the point in the season where the bad teams have nothing to play for and a few teams are still optimistic enough to give full effort. This week has several games of such ilk. As always, home teams in caps.

JACKSONVILLE (-6.5) over Kansas City
An example of my above premise. The Jaguars need this one to get to .500 and give themselves a sense of false hope. The Chiefs personnel staff will actually be scouting the top college players. They're mostly better than the players they would have to watch if at the game.

CINCINNATI (+3) over Baltimore
Why are the Ravens suddenly unbeatable in the media? Carson Palmer has the Ravens' number and coming off a bye week, the Bengals will be well rested and prepared for an important division game.

INDIANAPOLIS (-9) over Houston
I will continue to pick the Colts, especially against a Texans team whose defense is the liability. I expect Peyton Manning to have a monster day at home.

ATLANTA (-10) over Washington
There is nothing funnier than living in the D.C. area and not being a fan of the team. Talk radio is littered with people bashing Daniel Snyder in every way possible. It's hard not to make fun of this team though at this point.

Green Bay (-9.5) over TAMPA BAY
The Bucs are my last hope for an 0-16 team. The Josh's make that entirely possible.

Arizona (+3) over CHICAGO
The Cardinals are 3-0 on the road. Go figure. I have a sneaky suspicion that the Bears just aren't very good. Their O-Line is crumbling in front of Cutler.

Miami (+10.5) over NEW ENGLAND
I like what the Dolphins are doing and I expect their array of offensive sets will give the Patriots trouble. The first meeting last year resulted in a dismantling by the Dolphins. I don't think it will be the same, but Miami should keep it close.

NEW ORLEANS (-13) over Carolina
Another team that I will continue to back until they lose. Vegas can't make this line high enough. By the way, do the Saints ever play on the road anymore?

Detroit (+10) over SEATTLE
I cannot justify taking Seattle and giving 10 points no matter how bad the Lions are playing. When two below average teams are playing, take the points and run.

SAN FRANCISCO (-4) over Tennessee
Really? Vince Young against a really good defense on the road? This is free money it would appear. I guess Vegas still thinks the Titans care about the season. I've got news for Vegas; they don't.

San Diego (+5) over NEW YORK GIANTS
More free money it seems. I will caution you that no matter which side I take with the Chargers, the other happens. I will continue to ride them though as I still think they are the best team in the league. Eli at home is never a good thing and Phillip Rivers will have a field day with the vulnerable Giants secondary.

PHILADELPHIA (-3) over Dallas
Low line. Dallas has yet to beat anyone, especially on the road. The Eagles appear to be soaring high after dismantling the Giants last week. Expect more of the same.

Pittsburgh (-3) over DENVER
I can't get over the schedule the Broncos have had to play the past few weeks. No wonder I never pick them. They're continuously playing the best teams in football.

A sickening congratulations

Well, I guess it's time for me to do the unthinkable. I will congratulate the New York Yankees for winning their record 27th World Series Title. I neglected to write a World Series preview due to the fact that I am an unabashed Yankee hater and because they were prohibitive favorites all year and in every playoff series. The series wasn't played overly well. The starting pitching was not exactly World Series caliber save Cliff Lee being Steve Carlton in Game 1 and AJ Burnett forgetting it was a big game in Game 2 (he quickly reaffirmed my belief that he stinks in Game 5 though). Half of the Phillies hitters decided not to show up for the entire series (Ryan Howard would have been more productive standing at the plate and not swinging. Maybe he could have driven pitch counts up that way).

I won't spend this time criticizing the Phillies and what they didn't accomplish. I'd like to commend the Yankees for the way they operate, especially this year. Instead of spending money recklessly on older free agents, Brian Cashman went after the upper echelon of free agents, namely CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira. In a sport where revenue sharing does occur and a majority of owners pocket their profits, the Yankees reinvest in the well-being of the team and its fans. I might not like the fact they can outspend every other team, but I admire them for having the wherewithal to do it. The Twins or Pirates could easily double their payrolls, but they have owners who choose not to do so. I also commend them for the fact that they are supposed to win the World Series every year. That's an enormous amount of pressure to put on a team yearly. But the players delivered this year after Brian Cashman and management delivered in the offseason. And when everyone delivers, good things happen.

Week 8 Picks

Based on my weekly performance, I'm pretty mediocre. Average. The big .500. As always home teams in caps.

BALTIMORE (-3.5) over Denver
Okay, I swore that I would be backing the Broncos if they beat the Chargers. I lied. Seriously, I can't consciously pick them to win in what amounts to a must win game for the Ravens at home.

Cleveland (+13.5) over CHICAGO
How bad are the Browns? The Bears lost by 35 last week and are favored by almost 2 touchdowns. I'm not sure what to think at this point.

Houston (-3.5) over BUFFALO
The Bills are showing some life all of a sudden. But the Texans are a formidable offense that puts points up in bunches. I have two words: Ryan Fitzpatrick.

GREEN BAY (-3) over Minnesota
Favre! Lambeau! I just hope the end of the world doesn't occur when these two forces meet.

INDIANAPOLIS (-12.5) over San Francisco
The Colts are officially in the "we have to make them 2 touchdown favorites over anyone" zone. I'll stick with Peyton Manning regardless.

Miami (+3) over NEW YORK JETS
Quick turnaround for the second game between these teams. I'm not sure the Jets have had time to solve the "Wildcat" offense.

DETROIT (-4) over St. Louis
Maybe this is a sign of the end of times. The Lions are favored for the first time since week 1 last year. Lucky for them the Rams stink. I can't put it any other way.

DALLAS (-9.5) over Seattle
Are the Seahawks still playing? I haven't seen them since they wore those uniforms that burned my retinas. Let me know if you see them.

SAN DIEGO (-16.5) over Oakland
"I just can't seem to quit you."

Jacksonville (+3) over TENNESSEE
Vince Young is not walking through that door! Actually he is, and that is a bad thing for Titans fans.

ARIZONA (-10) over Carolina
The Cardinals have reprised their role as best in class of the NFC West. The defense is playing well and the offense is Super Bowl quality.

PHILADELPHIA (+1) over New York Giants
I've watched this line go from -2.5 to +1 in a week. The public money is on the Giants and that's never a good sign. Maybe this is the week Michael Vick proves his value. Maybe.

Atlanta (+10.5) over NEW ORLEANS
I don't care how good the Saints are. I can't justify giving 10.5 to the Falcons. I think the Saints win, but the Falcons keep it close in the similar setting of the dome.

Week 7 Picks

I hate gambling. As always home teams in Caps.

KANSAS CITY (+5) over San Diego
My break up with the Chargers will be slow and painful. I'll call them back and have them over late night a few times, but eventually, I have to get them out of my life. It's just too painful to be with them.

Indianapolis (-13.5) over ST. LOUIS
So the Colts get their bye week to prepare for the 0-6 juggernaut known as the Rams. Peyton Manning should be out of this game by the middle of the 3rd Quarter. On a side note, I don't see a game where the Rams will be less than a 7-point dog. Maybe the Lions game, but that's iffy at this point.

Chicago (+1.5) over CINCINNATI
Benson! Bears! Revenge on the mind! Okay, so that didn't get you excited. Don't NFL players play a former team every week? I guess Cedric Benson has reached national media status since he has a "revenge" game. Give me Cutler and an improved pass rush.

Green Bay (-8) over CLEVELAND
This line bothers me a bit. Josh Cribbs could have 2 huge returns and a surprisingly stout Browns defense could give a terrible Packer O-Line problems. I could see a 17-10 Packers win. Buy a point to get this line down to 7. Definite stay away game for me.

PITTSBURGH (-5.5) over Minnesota
I've seen this line at 4, but that doesn't make a huge difference to me. The Vikings are like a ship with some leaks in it; eventually, it gives way to the water. Going to Pittsburgh and facing a Steelers defense back to full strength will be the first loss for Favre in purple.

TAMPA BAY (+15) over New England (In London)
These London games are never played well. This is a ton of points for a game being played 3,000 miles away. I'm thinking New England won't be able to replicate last week's performance. They should win comfortably, but not by 3 possessions.

HOUSTON (-3) over San Francisco
I have nothing to write about this game. However, I do want to discuss something. What are the credentials to be a MLB Manager? I was watching the Angels-Yankees game last night and I'm pretty sure both managers were doing everything they could to interject themselves into the game. I've got a suggestion: let your obscenely paid players do their job and put in the best pitchers when making changes. It's really annoying watching baseball in the postseason because of managers who feel the need to be the focus.

OAKLAND (+6) over New York Jets
Call me crazy, but I believe in the Raiders...to an extent. I suppose this is as much an indictment on Mark Sanchez, but the Raider defense is solid. This should be low scoring so I'll take the points.

Buffalo (+7) over CAROLINA
Two bad teams. A lot of points. I'll take the touchdown and be happy.

New Orleans (-6.5) over MIAMI
I've seen a lot of pundits tabbing Miami for the win outright. Not happening. The Saints offense will be fine in the comfy confines of Miami. They'll continue to roll through the league with a precision passing game that is unparalleled.

Atlanta (+4) over DALLAS
Free money. This is a joke. Atlanta is the better team straight up. A lot of Dallas fans' money involved in this line. Feel free to take some of it. I like the Atlanta money line just as much.

NEW YORK GIANTS (-7) over Arizona
This has tuned into a must win for both teams. The Giants need to beat somebody decent and the Cardinals can gather control of the NFC West this week. I'll put my faith in the team that attempts to run the ball.

Philadelphia (-7) over WASHINGTON
B-7. I-16. N-23. G-32. O-41. BINGO! Those will be the first 5 play calls by Sherman Lewis. He'll quickly realize he's overmatched. It wouldn't surprise me if John Gruden leaves the booth at halftime to take over as head coach of the Redskins. Nothing would shock me at this point.

The Death of the Three-Team Teaser

Well, yesterday I reached the conclusion that I will not be placing anymore three-team teaser wagers. I'm done. Finished. No wonder it's called a teaser; it never actually comes through. In two successive weeks, I've picked 2 separate 10 point three-team teasers, one in college and one in the NFL. I lost the college teaser by 1 point; the NFL, which should be the surer bet wasn't even close. I was able to move the Eagles-Raiders line to Eagles -4. And of course, the Raiders win outright. I can't even begin to describe how many expletives I released while being subjected to Andy Reid's buffoonery. Add the fact that the Jets lost outright in OT to the Buffalo Bills at home and you can see why I'm done wagering on teasers. Depending on three teams to win a game is Russian Roulette apparently. In my college wager, I needed Washington St., an admittedly horrible team, to cover the spread by 45 points. So of course, the Cougars lose by 46. The lesson: don't depend on college kids when actually spending money.

College Football Thoughts

Well, I've spent an entire day watching college football. A few thoughts to ponder:

* Is it me or is the talent level and number of good teams way down? I watched Texas and Oklahoma (2 pre-season top 10 teams) play a game so sloppy, you may have seen a better performance at your local high school on Friday night. Just awful. 8 turnovers, 21 penalties, poor special teams: the definition of undisciplined football. Colt McCoy, one of the Heisman favorites, threw for 127 yards and averaged 3.3 YPA.

* To add to my previous thought, what happened to the supreme talent that Florida was supposed to posses. Their offense is extremely predictable and one-dimensional: snap to Tebow, try to block, Tebow run hard. I thought Urban Meyer was an offensive genius. There are no play-makers and no speed on the outside right now. I don't like their repeat chances.

* Notice the two teams in the above thoughts are the supposed favorites to play for the National Title. I'm just saying.

* Well, Notre Dame, you didn't let me down. I almost thought you were going to beat USC. Alas, things are normal. Consider how far the Irish have fallen. They were 10 point underdogs at home against a team starting a true freshman at quarterback. This is as mediocre a USC team as Weis will see; his opportunity to beat the Trojans has passed. Next year will be the 30 point drubbing we're all used to and most likely the end of Weis' "decided schematic advantage" at Notre Dame.

* Speaking of the Irish, how is the talent level on the defensive side of the ball and offensive line so poor? Weis obviously can identify talent (note the skill positions). Does he ignore the positions he doesn't care about? With the weekly 4-hour infomercial that airs nationally, you would think Weis could get any player he wanted for the most part. I was nauseous having to listen to Tom Hammond and Pat Haden spew continuous nonsense about how close this team is to winning big. News-flash: they are not one of the best 35 teams in America right now; and that's with an All-American QB. One of them was up in arms about how USC caught a break (intentional grounding instead of a fumble); a break that was called correctly by the officials. I didn't know forward passes could be fumbles Tom. Thanks for clarifying.

* Ohio St.'s offense is putrid. Jim Tressel has to take accountability at some point for Terrelle Pryor's poor performances (3 fumbles, 2 interceptions against 1-5 Purdue). I have to think that Michigan is happy he didn't come to Ann Arbor.

* Call me crazy, but I think Miami might be the best team in America right now. They'll be favored from here on out and should finish 11-1 with a great strength of schedule rating. The U is back.

Week 6 Picks

A stellar Week 5 for myself. Too bad the money was in college football last week. Vegas can't seem to push some of these lines high enough. As always, home team in caps:

Kansas City (+6.5) over WASHINGTON
I've been burned before by Washington giving a touchdown at home (Tampa Bay). I'm not about to lay any points with the Redskins. Even at 2-3, I'm starting to think this team belongs in my horrible teams tier. Chiefs get their first win.

Houston (+5.5) over CINCINNATI
The Texans could easily be 4-1 and the Bengals could easily be 1-4. The NFL is a funny place. I think the Texans hang tough with Cincy in what could be a let down game after last week's win over the Ravens.

PITTSBURGH (-14) over Cleveland
Oh my. Cleveland had a hard time scoring 6 points against the Bills last week (in a win I might add; you didn't hear about the Cleveland-Buffalo game because Roger Goodell liquidated the game footage faster than the Patriots spy tapes). The Steelers need an easy win right now and the Browns will oblige.

Baltimore (+3) over MINNESOTA
Hey, it's a good game. Don't get used to it. The Viking gave up 400 yards to the Kyle Boller-led Rams last week. If not for 3 fumbles, who knows what may have happened. I'm not sold on this Vikings defense yet and the Ravens have the weapons to exploit the overrated secondary. I like Flacco and the boys to get back on the winning track.

JACKSONVILLE (-9.5) over St. Louis
How bad are the Rams? They are getting almost 10 points against a team that lost by 41 the previous week. I'm not sure that's ever happened. Sadly, they'd have to be getting more for me to bet on them.

New York Giants (+3) over NEW ORLEANS
I watched the Jets defense shut down the Drew Brees attack in the Super Dome a couple weeks ago. I think the Giants Defense is better and Eli won't make the mistakes that Sanchez did. I really don't think this one will be close. The fact I'm getting points is just the icing on the cake.

TAMPA BAY (+3) over Carolina
Tails won the coin flip.

Detroit (+13.5) over GREEN BAY
Has Vegas seen Green Bay's offensive line? Detroit can score with anyone and Aaron Rodgers spends half his time on his back (and not in the good way). Green Bay will win because Detroit doesn't have the talent to play with the Pack for 4 quarters, but this is way too many points to lay.

Philadelphia (-14) over OAKLAND
I have so much to say and yet, it comes down to a simple fact. Oakland and JaMarcus Russell are putrid. This line could have been -28 and I wouldn't have flinched. I've never seen a home team as such a huge dog.

Arizona (+3) over SEATTLE
I can't get a feel for Arizona, but I don't think Seattle is 3 points better. This is a game the Cardinals have to have to defend their division title. Quietly, the 3-team NFC West has become competitive. Yes, I know the Rams are in the division. I just refuse to acknowledge them as a team.

NEW YORK JETS (-9.5) over Buffalo
Another "did Vegas see Team X play last week" game. The Bills held the Browns Derek Anderson to 2-17 for 23 yards and a QB Rating of 15.1...and lost the game. Mark Sanchez could have a QB Rating of 5 and win the game. The Jets D is stout and will have no problem containing an offense running on fumes.

NEW ENGLAND (-9) over Tennessee
The Pats haven't lost consecutive games in 3 years. The Titans haven't won a game this year. You do the math.

ATLANTA (-3) over Chicago
A great battle of young quarterbacks. Matt Ryan has better weapons and has proven more up to this point in his young career. Jay Cutler has held off on his urge to throw the ball to the wrong team. Not this week.

SAN DIEGO (-3.5) over Denver
This is my last hurrah. I will never pick against the Broncos again if they win this game. The perennial Super Bowl favorites are in a must win situation as a loss would practically give the division to the Broncos. I think Philip Rivers finally shows the cracks in the Denver defense and puts up a huge number.

Week 5 Picks

New rule: take favorites. As always Home team in Caps.

Minnesota (-10) over ST. LOUIS
The Rams are the worst team in football. Eventually, the Vikings play an NFL team. Just not this week.

Dallas (-8) over KANSAS CITY
Okay, I lied. Kansas City is the worst team in football. In general, the state of Missouri needs to try a new sport. Two huge favorites on the road. This will determine if the Cowboys are worthy of playoff talk. A good team destroys a bad team, even on the road.

Washington (+3.5) over CAROLINA
This is an atrocious football game. Washington's 2 wins are at home over Tampa Bay and St. Louis...by a combined 5 points. Still, Jake Delhomme is a veteran at throwing the ball to players in the color of jersey he is not wearing. I'll take the points when I can get them against Jake.

PHILADELPHIA (-15) over Tampa Bay
We're entering our "really good teams against really bad teams" portion of this week's games. Oh, never mind; every game falls into that category it would seem.

NEW YORK GIANTS (-15) over Oakland
See what I mean.

Cleveland (+6) over BUFFALO
Did anyone watch Buffalo against the Dolphins last week? As bad as the Browns are (competing with the Missouri duo for the #1 pick next year), Buffalo isn't far behind. It's a lot of points to give between two bad teams.

Cincinnati (+8.5) over BALTIMORE
I love the Cincinnati defense. It's physical and stops the run as well as any other defense. I don't think they'll win outright, but the Bengals will hang tough and cover. The Ravens are still thinking about grazing Tom Brady.

DETROIT (+10.5) over Pittsburgh
This Lions team is a different entity at home. The Steelers are a good team, but aren't necessarily a blow out winner. I just noticed I'm picking dogs and ignoring my rule. Well, eventually some of these teams have to cover.

Atlanta (+2.5) over SAN FRANCISCO
Interesting line. If we assume home field is worth 3 points, then it appears Vegas thinks the Falcons are a slightly better team. So do I. Coming off a bye the offense will be stellar and pull out the win.

New England (-3) over DENVER
Well, I've given in. The Broncos are a good football team. But Mr. Belichick rarely loses to one of his overrated pupils. Josh McDaniels might be a good coach, but he's a while away from beating the Pats.

Houston (+5.5) over ARIZONA
What have the Cards done to be a 5.5 point favorite over a Texans team that scores points in bushels (not literally)? I like Houston in a shootout to win outright so you know I'm absolutely giddy about getting nearly a touchdown.

Jacksonville (+1) over SEATTLE
I have no opinion whatsoever. Two enigmas. I'll take the one coming off a good win with a healthy quarterback.

Indianapolis (-4) over TENNESSEE
Feels like Vegas is begging me to take the Colts. I shall and should collect. They are an extremely good road team and the Titans secondary is horrible. I think the Colts have a pretty good QB.

MIAMI (+2) over New York Jets
I believe the Dolphins have the defense to give young Sanchez trouble. Of course the Jets have the defense to give the young Henne trouble. So call this a gut feeling that the Dolphins defense will come to play at home in front of a national audience.

An outsider's perspective

We are 1/4th into the Brett Favre-Minnesota experiment. The culmination of the first quarter happened to be a Monday Night Football game between Favre and the Vikings and his former team, the Green Bay Packers. Even though the game was in Minnesota, the hype was immeasurable. My thoughts:

* I was skeptical, but through 4 games, Brad Childress looks incredibly intelligent. Favre is making throws that even last year he struggled to complete (the skinny post to Rice for a TD in the San Francisco game comes to mind). Maybe, the arm is healthy. I personally think that playing in a dome is helping. And the weak competition doesn't hurt (Browns, Lions, 49ers, Packers).

* I will continue to applaud the Packers for making the QB change to Aaron Rodgers. He throws an absolutely gorgeous ball and I think he is the better QB at this time (the offensive line not so much).

* Can the media please stop fawning over this man? I know he loves it (as evidenced by the constant summer attention), but he doesn't ask for John Gruden's everlasting approval. Gruden was not able to do his job as an analyst Monday night because he was too enamored with Favre.

* As good as Favre was Monday, it has to disturb the Vikings that Adrian Peterson struggled so mightily. They are a good team with the possibility to be fantastic and Super Bowl contenders as long as Peterson lives up to his previous performance. I think he will, but the Packers showed that stopping him is possible.

Week 4 Picks

As always, home teams in caps.

HOUSTON (-9) over Oakland
Jamarcus Russel has completed 41.3% of passes this year. I think I could nail 50 for the Raiders. Oakland can't make big plays down the field and Houston can.

Tennessee (-3) over JACKSONVILLE
The Titans are a desperate team at 0-3. I'm giving them one final chance to get involved in the 09-10 NFL season. On a side note, this game will be blacked out most definitely.

Baltimore (+2) over NEW ENGLAND
I don't feel great about this one. But based on what I've watched, Tom Brady is not quite comfortable in the pocket and that's never a good thing when playing the Ravens. The Pats defense has overachieved so far.

Cincinnati (-6) over CLEVELAND
This falls under my new rule: bet against teams that hate their new coach after three games. Also, the Browns have scored 1 offensive TD in the past 32 quarters (and that was last year).

New York Giants (-8.5) over KANSAS CITY
The Chiefs should be able to top The Bucs performance of last week (80 yards of offense). They should at least get to 110 yards against the Giants.

Detroit (+10) over CHICAGO
The winning streak won't continue, but the cover streak should. This Lions team is feeling great about itself and Stafford is playing with confidence. The Bears win a close one.

WASHINGTON (-7.5) over Tampa Bay
Well, at least the Redskins don't play the Lions this week. I've got 5 words for you: Josh Johnson on the road. Even the Redskins can't blow this one.

INDIANAPOLIS (-10) over Seattle
Good news: the Seahawks won't be wearing those uniforms on the road. Bad news: Peyton Manning is on the field.

NEW ORLEANS (-7) over New York Jets
I think I might be the only human being left who is skeptical of the Jets. Has anyone else noticed that Mark Sanchez hasn't been asked to do anything yet? This is a true road test for the young QB. The Saints crush this Jets defense and send them back to reality.

Buffalo (-1.5) over MIAMI
I can't talk myself into caring about this game. My only thought is Chad Henne's first start is against an underrated Buffalo defense.

SAN FRANCISCO (-9.5) over St. Louis
The last of my four horrible teams to bet against, the Rams. Frank Gore is out and the 49ers are still almost double digit favorites. It's going to be a long year in the midwest.

Dallas (-3) over DENVER
I'm not buying the Broncos 3-0 start (like most of America). The Cowboys should be able to run the ball all game and Kyle Orton threatens no one down the field.

San Diego (+6.5) over PITTSBURGH
I think this line is absurdly high. The Chargers have the most talent in football and Pittsburgh is missing their all-world safety. Philip Rivers throws the deep ball better than anyone. I think the Chargers win outright.

Green Bay (+3.5) over MINNESOTA
This is the game that will shatter all viewing records. Favre vs. Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers is the better QB and he'll make the plays necessary to win the game. Keep in mind the Vikings have beat the Browns, Lions, and luckily got past the 49ers. The Packers are in a different league.

Giving the NHL some love

I've decided to throw out my Stanley Cup Finals pick for the 09-10 season. I'm not sure why; I don't follow hockey aggressively until February, but I'm sensing a revival of hockey in America. It's the best playoff sport (if you can find it on television) and it looks amazing in HD. The tragic thing about the NHL is the huge discrepancy in the good and bad teams. The playoff teams for the most part are set, save for the last couple of seeds in each conference. The great thing that the NHL has going for it is the original six (Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, New York Rangers, Boston) are once again relevant. It also has a couple of young stars in Pittsburgh (Crosby) and Washington (Ovechkin) to carry the league for years. I think it's Ovechkin's turn to reach the Stanley Cup Finals; but he'll struggle against a formidable Detroit Red Wings Defense. The Wings will hoist the Cup for the second time in three years. Hockey, I'll see you in February.

An overdue post

I've been dealing with computer issues and whatnot, but that's no excuse for not making this post a few days ago. The run has ended, but what the Atlanta Braves have accomplished since August 1 has been nothing short of remarkable. The Braves were left for dead on numerous occasions only to reel off several sizable winning streaks to get back into wild card contention. They were at one point 2 games behind the Colorado Rockies after being as far back as 8 games in September. But that's not why I'm writing about the Braves. I'm here to salute Bobby Cox. Now those close to me know that I've never been an Atlanta supporter (probably has something to do with my obnoxious brother, a notorious Brave fan). But Bobby Cox might be the most underrated individual in sports during my lifetime. 14 straight division titles. In 24 years with the Braves, he has compiled a .557 winning percentage, a truly staggering number in baseball. Word has come out that Cox will be retiring after next year. His place is reserved in the Hall of Fame as a manager. Protractors point out the fact that Cox has only won one World Series in those 24 years. It's not that easy to win a World Series people. Especially in a luke warm market like Atlanta. Baseball's playoffs are more of a crapshoot than anything with the best team rarely winning (Cardinals in '06, Phillies in '08, etc.). Bobby Cox should go down as a top 10 manager of all time. I have a feeling he will be forgotten quickly, but what Bobby Cox has accomplished over the past two decades is worthy of praise. Even from an admitted Brave-hater.

Week 3 Picks (albeit late)

Well, contrary to what you may have thought, I was not so ashamed with my week 2 performance that I had quit. I've had some computer issues, but I did make my picks as always. After a 6-10 Week 2, I turned in a 10-6 week (winners were Detroit, San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, Baltimore, New York Giants, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, New Orleans, and Green Bay). A couple of thoughts:

1. Brett Favre; lucky throw. Greg Lewis; heck of a catch. I will continue to be against the Vikings.
2. Good for the Detroit Lions (my personal team of choice). They are faaaar from the worst team in football this year.
3. The Bengals are the real deal. The defense hits hard and Carson Palmer looks comfortable in the pocket for the first time in years.
4. Please bet against Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and St. Louis all year. These are 3 of the worst teams I've seen in a while; worse than the '08 Lions. They won't lose every game, but these teams are terrible. KC might not be far behind.

Week 2: 6-10
Week 3: 10-6
Season: 25-23

Week 2 Picks

As always, home team in caps. We'll see if we can bounce back after a 9-7 week that was ruined by a couple of Monday night games in which heavyweights played like amateurs.

Oakland (+3) over KANSAS CITY
This Raider team looked, dare I say, disciplined Monday night against the Chargers. The Chiefs will struggle to score on a surprisingly stout defense.

TENNESSEE (-6.5) over Houston
Two teams who lost in week 1, but you wouldn't know it based on how they played. The Titans defense looked better than ever in falling to the Steelers in OT on opening night, while the Texans looked dreadful in every facet.

New England (-3.5) over NY JETS
This game seems like easy picking to me. Folks are down on the Patriots after a poor week one performance and the Jets played the Texans. Look for Brady to light up the Jets secondary.

GREEN BAY (-9) over Cincinnati
I was burned once by the Bengals. It will not happen again. The Packer 3-4 Defense looked very good, forcing Cutler into one bad decision after another.

DETROIT (+10) over Minnesota
This is the week. The week that the streak ends. The Lions know Favre's tendencies and can force him into mistakes. Look for them to load up on ADP and force Favre to throw down field.

PHILADELPHIA (PK) over New Orleans
The Eagles defense isn't the Lions defense. I think McNabb guts it out and leads his Eagles to a huge win. The Saints defense couldn't stop a high school offense.

ATLANTA (-6) over Carolina
Delhomme is starting. That will be all.

WASHINGTON (-9.5) over St. Louis
Is this the week the Rams score a point? I doubt it. The Redskins defense is not the issue.

Arizona (+3) over JACKSONVILLE
Weird game. Writing these two team names down together just looks odd. The Arizona wide receivers will be able to exploit the over-aggressive Jaguar secondary.

Seattle (+1.5) over SAN FRANCISCO
One of these teams is for real and will win the NFC West. I've been banging the Seahawks for a while as that team and I'm not about to stop now. This should be a great, boring game.

BUFFALO (-5) over Tampa Bay
The Bucs are traveling to the north during the right time of the year. Problem is it wouldn't matter when they went to Buffalo as the Bucs offense is atrocious and the Bills might not be as bad as expected.

DENVER (-3) over Cleveland
I almost didn't make a pick in this game. What a joke of a match up.

SAN DIEGO (-3) over Baltimore
Game of the week. Tough road trip for the Ravens. Rivers is good enough to put up points against a Ravens defense that did not look very stout against a weak Chiefs team.

Pittsburgh (-3) over CHICAGO
Jay Cutler O/U interceptions: 3. The Bears could be in for a long season.

DALLAS (-3) over New York Giants
Jerry is opening up his new stadium and I think the Cowboys will do it in grand fashion. I still think the Giants are the better team, but emotion and adrenaline will be on the 'Boys side.

Indianapolis (-3) over MIAMI
Chad Pennington has to be perfect for the Dolphins to win. Peyton Manning usually is perfect.

Miami-GT

7:23 PM - Welcome to my first live blog. I'm joined by some grilled chicken, grilled zucchini and mushrooms, and some iced tea. Quite the company. Just wanted to throw out my prediction for the game before it starts. This is a Miami team needing to prove that the FSU win was no fluke. Also, playing its first home game should help. I think they'll struggle to stop the triple option attack as they did last year in Atlanta, but the offense is much improved and the defense has at least seen the option this time around. I like Miami's athletes a tad bit more and the Hurricanes will pull it out 31-23.

7:34 PM - I'd like to mention that I'm happy Erin Andrews could make it out for the game.

7:47 PM - This game brought to you by Jimmy Buffet and Landshark Beer.

7:51 PM - I remember in the past when teams could not run the option on Miami. I don't know if it's a lack of discipline or poor coaching, but this Miami defense is taking horrible angles on the option. GT is moving down the field pretty easily and the ball hasn't been in the air.

7:54 PM - 3rd & 6 from the Miami 17. GT runs for a 1 yard gain. The only time they were stopped is when Nesbitt made a poor read. Field Goal is good. 3-0 GT

8:03 PM - Well that was fast. In stark contrast to GT's running game, Miami strikes fast. 75 yards in 4 plays capped by a 40 yard TD pass by Jacory Harris to LaRon Byrd. Miami has an abundance of athletes.

8:07 PM - Miami's kicker has now had two kickoffs tonight. And twice he's hooked it out of bounds. How's the depth chart looking?

8:24 PM - A second TD for Harris. And wow the Tight End was W-I-D-E open. This Miami offense looks incredible. I'm starting to wonder if Miami is capable of a 10-2 season. It looks like it could get ugly, especially considering that GT is an option team.

8:33 PM - 3rd & 12 from the Miami 29. Incomplete pass by Nesbitt. Looks like Paul Johnson is going to go for it on 4th down. Flag down; pass interference on Miami.

8:45 PM - Miami just tacked on a field goal. My interest is waning. By the way, apparently, Miami voted its kicker MVP of the team last year. I'm speechless over this revelation.

8:52 PM - Wow. Travis Benjamin is fast. Really fast. He just reversed field and ran about 35 yards for a 13 yard gain. I like Randy Shannon, but you don't teach that stuff.

9:07 PM - Halftime. 17-3 Miami. A couple of observations:
1. The Miami front 4 is getting a great push, which is eliminating space on the option
2. Jacory Harris is really good. Where did this sophomore come from?
3. GT has great team speed; Miami's speed is in another stratosphere though.
I don't see the Jackets making a run with the limited air attack and inability to keep up with the speedy Hurricane receivers.

9:29 PM - I want to point out that Randy Shannon is one of my favorite college coaches. Energetic, charismatic, creative. He's a dynamic coach who attracts talented kids and gives young players a chance to play from their initial practice. He's exactly the kind of coach that I would love to play for (you know, if I was eighteen and an All-American athlete). I'm just glad that Miami has stuck with him; the future is quite radiant.

9:33 PM - The route is on. 24-3 Miami after Harris just led another TD drive to open the second half. Play is under review now, but James was definitely in. I'm going to stop posting for a while as I'm following less and less now. My final thought (for now): Miami is really good; way better than I or anyone else realized. They've dominated this game from the outset and are in full control of the Coastal division of the ACC.

Trying something new

Trying something new. I'll be live blogging during the Miami-Georgia Tech game. Why? I don't know. Seems like it would be fun and maybe I can provide some insight in real time. Anyway, check back around 7:30pm tonight.

Michael Crabtree

Michael Crabtree is either the most spoiled human being in the world or the stupidest. I'm leaning towards the former, but it's probably a combination. Michael Crabtree was the 10th overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers this past April in the NFL Draft. He has yet to sign and the 49ers are set to kick off in 30 minutes. At this point, there is no reason for either side to budge. Crabtree begins missing game checks today and the 49ers have prepared all summer and fall without him. Crabtree has threatened to hold out the entire year and re-enter the draft next April because he believes he will be a top 5 pick. I'm not completely sure where he's getting this information, but I don't think one improves their draft position by not playing for a year. He will be forgotten by next April; an afterthought. He may be drafted 20th, but if the 10th pick money is not enough for him, why would the 20th pick money entice him to sign? What college kid turns down 12-15 million dollars? Either a spoiled one or a moron. The 49ers have offered him a deal for an amount between what the 9th pick and 11th pick signed for; seems completely plausible to me. Crabtree wants top 5 money; seems irrefutably moronic and illogical to me. I just hope this kid realizes that he's throwing away a lot of money and ruining his future earning power (through endorsements and performing well this year) over something so completely idiotic. I remember during the week leading up to the draft Eric Mangini mentioned that Crabtree seemed like a prima donna and had character concerns. This appears to be one time that Mangini is right.

College Football Week 2

It's a fairly weak slate of games this week on the college football landscape. Of course, USC-Ohio St. makes up for the lack of other games pitting top 25 teams against one another. Michigan-Notre Dame of course has history and tradition on its side, but neither team has been a national contender in years. The rest of the college schedule is so unappealing that I'm heading to the UVA-TCU game instead of watching all of the action. And even as appealing as the USC-Ohio St. is on paper, reality says that USC has more talent all over the field and should win fairly easily. Let's call it 27-10 with a dominating run game controlling the football. As for Michigan-Notre Dame, I'll take Michigan at home in a slight upset. Sadly, it's the only time I'd take a Big 10 team to win an out of conference game.

Week 1 Picks

I've decided to pick every game this year against the spread and see how I fair against prognosticators across the sports landscape. Without further ado (Home team in caps).

ATLANTA (-4) over Miami
Matt Ryan picks up right where he left off last year with a fast Atlanta offense on the turf.

BALTIMORE (-12.5) over Kansas City
Hate taking huge favorites, but I think Baltimore's defense will score enough to cover this spread against a team that fired it's offensive coordinator...last week.

Philadelphia (-2.5) over CAROLINA
Best early game; no Vick, no distractions for Eagles. Delhomme and turnovers for Panthers.

CINCINNATI (-4.5) over Denver
Wow. I can't believe I just typed that; no gambler would ever take the Bengals and give 4.5. That's how bad these Broncos are folks.

CLEVELAND (+4) over Minnesota
I'm sorry, but a 40-year old QB on the road with barely 2 weeks of prep time? I'll be going against the Vikings often I believe.

HOUSTON (-4.5) over New York Jets
Houston is the trendy pick to be "this year's Falcons." This pick is more about the fact that Mario Williams will be leading a pass rush against a rookie QB with 13 college starts.

Jacksonville (+7) over INDIANAPOLIS
My pick for bounce back team is the Jaguars. This is a team a year removed from giving the undefeated Pats a game in the AFC Divisional Round.

Detroit (+13) over NEW ORLEANS
Way too many points for a New Orleans defense. The Lions will score, but struggle to stop the Brees attack.

DALLAS (-6) over Tampa Bay
Will Jessica Simpson be the Offensive Coordinator for the Bucs?

ARIZONA (-6.5) over San Francisco
Arizona will return to mediocrity; just not against a 49er team that doesn't do anything well.

Washington (+6.5) over NEW YORK GIANTS
Toughest game to gauge. Two really good defenses that should limit the scoring. So it'll be 45-42

SEATTLE (-7.5) over St. Louis
I have no opinion on this game. That means I have something in common with 98% of America.

GREEN BAY (-3.5) over Chicago
Great Sunday night game; Rodgers will get the best of a banged up Bears secondary.

NEW ENGLAND (-11.5) over Buffalo
This spread could have been 20 and I'd have picked the Pats. Apparently, Buffalo is running a "Pop Warner" offense in the hurry up. I'm sure this will turn out well.

San Diego (-9.5) over OAKLAND
There is no greater talent discrepancy between two teams in any other game this week.

This week = 1-0
Year = 1-0

Super Bowl Pick

Well, it's that time of year; the time of year where more marriages end than any other time: NFL season. Tonight's Pittsburgh-Tennessee game kicks off the season as the defending champion Steelers host the Titans. Pittsburgh is giving 6, which seems high to me initially considering these were the two best teams in Football last year. I'll take the Titans and the points as I do think it's going to be a low scoring affair. I'll post the rest of my week one picks Friday morning.

Now, as for the Super Bowl. This year seems extremely top heavy as there are 4-5 teams in each conference that I think have a shot at winning it all. In the AFC, the Pats, Steelers, and Chargers appear to be loaded. Also, I love the Ravens as a sleeper for the title. I do think the Colts will struggle this year, but I won't count out any team led by Peyton Manning. I'll go with the Chargers this year. I've picked them the last couple years based on the fact they have the best roster in the AFC and I'm a believer that talent wins out eventually.

In the NFC, the teams I see with a shot are Philadelphia, the New York Giants, Green Bay, Chicago, and Atlanta. The Falcons are a bit too young and porous on defense to win consistently in the postseason. As with the AFC, I'll go with the team that has the best 53-man roster and that is the Philadelphia Eagles. This offense will be dynamic and the defense is disruptive and creates numerous turnovers. As for the big game, give me Philadelphia over San Diego in a game that will have the most talent on the field of any game in my lifetime.

Brad Penny's San Fran debut

I really hate to beat a dead horse but...Brad Penny just got done shutting down the best offense in the NL, the Philadelphia Phillies, for 8 innings. 5 hit ball was more than enough for his first win in the NL. With the Red Sox, Penny went 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA this year including a horrid 1-6 record over his last 11 starts. I'd like to say I'm shocked, but I'd be lying. It's just another example of a pitcher going from the AL to the NL and finding immediate success.

Quick College Football Preview

The 09-10 College Football Season is about to kick off on Thursday night with a great game between Boise St. and Oregon. I love early season inter-conference games because of the novelty and rarity of the match ups. Alabama-Va. Tech, USC-Ohio St., and Georgia-Ok. St. are just three of the games in the first couple weeks I'm amped to see. But the end point of college football is the BCS title game. All other bowl games are meaningless unless you're the name on the Bowl (believe me, we all get amped for the Papa Johns.com Bowl). I've seen most "experts" picking Florida vs. X with X being a variety of teams from Ohio St. (God, I hope not) to Notre Dame (yes, Lou Holtz is an "expert"). I won't bore you with my long reasoning. I'll just say that there are only four teams this year that will truly matter and two of them play each other: Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and USC. I'll take Texas over USC in a game not quite as well played as that '05 Rose Bowl. Colt McCoy is the best player in America on the best team. A Heisman and a national title are lovely parting gifts for the senior QB.

Thome to the...Dodgers?

I'm a bit confused today. I woke up (way earlier than a human being should have to may I add) to the news that Jim Thome had been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yes, those Dodgers. The same team that resides in the NL, a territory where the DH is non-existent. And yes, that is all Thome is at this point in his career. Even he insists the same. Thome has come out and said he does not want to play 1st Base so at best, he might pinch-hit 25 times down the stretch and play in any World Series games in an AL park. That's if the Dodgers reach the World Series and I'd place them 3rd in the NL's current pecking order. I realize it won't cost the Dodgers more than a second-rate minor leaguer to acquire Thome. But bringing in a DH for an NL contender seems like a waste of a roster spot regardless of the cost.

Michael Vick

Well, it's finally time for my soap box on Michael Vick. At work today, I overheard a mother talking about how difficult it was to explain to her 10-year old boy that after two years in prison, Vick would be earning over $1 million for this season. My question is what does this man have to do to earn the right to earn a living.

The man spent two years in a federal prison, losing millions of dollars via his contract and endorsements and yet, people are flabbergasted that he has the opportunity to earn a living. Since when was serving your time and rehabilitating a bad thing? Doesn't the fact he served his time allow for retribution? I'm as much a dog person as anyone, but Michael Vick deserves the chance to play football without persecution for past indiscretions. Just because he can do more with a football than 99.99% of the public doesn't mean he shouldn't be afforded the opportunity to make that much money. That's called life.

What this woman should really have a hard time explaining is how Chris Brown can abuse a beautiful young woman and get 1 day of jail. That's the tough one to figure out.

AL MVP Race

The new rage appears to be the MVP race in the AL and apparently, to my surprise, Mark Teixeira is the frontrunner. Mauer is only a "compelling" candidate? Not to step on Kepner's toes, but Joe Mauer is the clear candidate at this point. The numbers are jaw-dropping, for a catcher no less. What I'd like to point out is that Teixeira is probably 5th in the race at best when viewing it objectively. Consider:

  • Mauer is hitting .378/.446/.643....as a catcher. He's clearly the favorite.
  • Miguel Cabrera, another 1st Baseman for a contender, is hitting .335/.400/.554.
  • Teixeira is hitting .283/.381/.557. But wait. Tex's home/road splits: Home - .308/.397/.634; Road - .258/.366/.483. Gee, I think Yankee Stadium has had a nice effect on Teixeira's numbers.
  • Kevin Youkilis and Justin Morneau are two more 1st Basemen outperforming Teixeira. And of the four 1st Basemen in contention, none stand out for defense according to Ultimate Zone Rating (although I'll admit Teixeira appears to be the best defensive player of the four).
  • Lastly, two Rays, Ben Zobrist and Jason Bartlett are outperforming Mr. Teixeira...as middle infielders.

So, I'd probably place Teixeira 5th or 6th in this race. He's a fine player who is having a great season that is being buoyed by his home ballpark. He'll probably win the award because he's on the best team and there's something about playing in New York. He just won't necessarily deserve it.

Griffey - The consummate professonal

Just a quick link to an article on Ken Griffey Jr. by Michael Rosenberg at SI. I will always hold Griffey in higher regard than all other baseball players of this era because I respect the grace and humility with which he has played without the hint of suspicion surrounding him. It will be a sad day when he no longer puts on a uniform, if only because we'll all miss that swing.

Indispensable?

Just read an interesting article on SI by NFL Writer John P. Lopez detailing the most indispensable player for each team in the NFC. Although I disagree with a few, one really stood out for me. Tony Gonzalez is the most indispensable player for the Falcons according to Lopez:

Gonzalez has had a very nice camp, adjusting to life as a Falcon and flashing the blocking and pass-catching ability that has made him a 10-time Pro Bowler. He can add the extra dimension to the Falcons' offense that may well be enough to make this team a threat to make a Super Bowl run. At 33, staying on the field could become a problem. If he can, great things could happen.

Tony Gonazalez? Really? I could come up with several players that are more indispensable for the Falcons (Matt Ryan anyone?). I love the addition of Gonzalez to an already dangerous Falcons offense, but this team was going to be potent regardless of the addition of a 33-year old Tight End. The most important players on this team will be a defensive front seven that HAS to get pressure on the opposing Quarterbacks or Matt Ryan will be in for a lot of shootouts this year.

Where'd the Offense Go?

Guess which team is last in the Majors in Runs scored, Batting Average, OBP, and Slugging? Nope, not the Padres. Not those rolling Giants or the lowly A's. It's the putrid Cincinnati Reds. That takes a while to sink in; how is any team last in that ballpark. Consider:

  • As a team they're hitting .239. No team save for those sorry Padres are within .14 points of that mark. Don't forget the park differences in those two teams.
  • Traditionally, Great American Ballpark has been in the top third of the Majors in Ballpark affect. I should point out this year it is playing fairly neutral (slightly towards a pitcher's park). Probably has something to do with the team playing in it.
  • Willy Taveras, the Reds leadoff hitter for close to 100 games this year is hitting .238/.273/.284. You read that right. I don't even have an insult for Dusty Baker that is strong enough.

This is a Cincinnati team that led the NL in scoring in 2005 and has traditionally been in the top half of the league in runs scored. Losing the abundance of offensive talent has finally taken it's toll on the Reds. Once thought to be a dark horse contender in the Central, they're just hoping to avoid the cellar and the minor league affiliate for the Pirates at this point. Oh, those are the Major League Pirates. My apologies.

How many pieces can you split a football team into?

Well, the Miami Dolphins continue to add to their team. And I'm not referring to players or staff. Apparently, they've added a couple more part owners in Serena and Venus Williams. Add them to Jimmy Buffet (naming partnership), Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and Marc Anthony as minority owners. Fairly soon, half of South Beach might have a stake in the team. I know these are minority shares, but I'm starting to wonder if new owner Stephen Ross is not as financially stable as initially thought. And yes, I know Ross claims the part owners are not being added for financial reasons, but it still raises some eyebrows. Six individuals added since he purchased the team in January; at least there's some star power floating around Land Shark Stadium now.

Doctoral Thoughts - Smoltz to the Cardinals

This is a segment that I plan to write often. It will be my thoughts on things that happen during the day.

John Smotlz has apparently signed with the Cardinals to be a fifth starter. Some quick thoughts:
  • I know I sound like an American League elitist, but this is a good move if only to get back to the easier league. He was crazy to think he could exceed in the AL in the first place at age 42.
  • That said, great move for the Cardinals. He's got better pure stuff than Pedro Martinez and he will essentially serve the same role.
  • I love what the Cardinals are doing: Holliday, DeRosa, Smoltz. I even like Lugo in the NL. Plus they were able to ink first round pick Shelby Miller, considered one of the top High School arms available.
Terrific July and August for GM John Mozeliak and his staff; a July and August that likely means an October on the field for the Cardinals.

Don't be mad at Favre...

So all the rage in sports right now is about Brett Bleepin' Favre. Look, I have no opinion on him as a person; he seems to be a prima donna of sorts, but at the same time, he appears to give it his all every time on the field. But this isn't a Brett Favre rant; this is a rant about those angry with Brett Favre. What's the guy supposed to do? Say no to 12 million dollars? Say no to missing training camp and walking in day 1 to first team reps? My goodness, any of us would do the same if we were in position to do so. I know I would. Life is about taking advantage of the opportunities afforded to you. Obviously Favre has earned the ability to secure the above things. All it takes is for one of the parties involved to say no. And the Vikings wouldn't do that regardless of how many opportunities they were afforded the chance to do so. So when you're reading the various pieces about how Favre is a terrible human being, blah, blah, blah, just remember this: he's just taking advantage of the fact that he is a future Hall of Fame QB. It was up to the Vikings to say no and they couldn't do it.

Welcome

I've decided to inject my thoughts on sports upon the world in this space. I plan to opine on just about anything that irks me or spurns a thought, but will mainly focus on the sports world. Hopefully, I will provide commentary that is different than that being spewed about on your national media coverage. I will write something daily and hope to inspire some discussion and comments with my thoughts. Again, welcome and I hope you enjoy.
